How Do I Clean My Jewellery?
Lets face it, jewellery gets dirty. When you wear something as long, or as often as a ring, or earrings, they are going to build up a bit of grime.
Sweat, oils from your skin and dirt from your environment start to build up in the crevices of your jewellery and it starts to look a bit… well, dirty.
Not only that, but certain metals like Brass and Sterling Silver oxidise when in contact with the air and build up a layer known as tarnish. Sometimes jewellery has a deliberate patina added to its surface, so be aware that certain cleaning methods may dull the intensity of/clean off this layer of patina.
So what to do…?
Keep reading for a few different ways you can shine up your favourite accessories.
To remove general dirt and grime:
A good place to start is with some liquid dish soap and water.
Use a soft toothbrush, a small amount of soap and scrub gently with a little water. Be careful not to bend any fragile pieces like ear-posts/hooks, then rinse well in clean water.
Dry carefully with a soft cloth.
To remove tarnish on Brass and Silver:
'Brasso’ and ‘Silvo’ are great products that you should be able to find at your supermarket. They are both pretty much the same thing, a polishing solution, and you can really use either rpoduct, but I prefer to use ‘Silvo’ as it is a finer abrasive and produces a higher polish.
Pour a small amount onto a soft cloth and carefully polish your piece of jewellery until the tarnish has been removed and its all bright and shiny. Wash carefully in warm, soapy water.
Always wipe the ear-post/hook with rubbing alcohol after using a polishing solution and before wear.
Polishing Cloth:
Another option is to purchase a Silver Polishing Cloth that comes impregnated with a polishing solution. These can work really well, but eventually wear out. As with the previous method, its always a good idea to wipe with alcohol before wear.
Ultra-sonic Cleaner:
If you are lucky enough to have a Ultra-sonic jewellery cleaner they are fantastic, however some gemstones don’t handle the ultra-sonic waves.
Last but not least…
You can take your jewellery pieces to a Jeweller to clean them for you.
